Making the Leap from Recovery to Discovery

How long have you been in recovery? 

Are you tired of basing your life on what you are no longer going to do? No more drinking, drugs, depression, isolation, or self-harm are good steps, but they're not something to build a meaningful life on. 

Building a Meaningful Life Requires Clear Vision of Where You're Going
Building a meaningful life requires making the leap from a recovery mindset to a discovery mindset. 

You have to take your eyes off the past and start looking to the future. What's your purpose? Why was it important to recover in the first place? Now that you're living free from your past bondages and addictions - what are you going to do with the rest of your life? 

Asking yourself these questions can be difficult. It's hard to think of the new when you've spent so much time analyzing the past. At times, it may even feel impossible. 

Driving a car requires well-planned roads that are laid out to take you to a destination. Living a meaningful life requires the creation of a similar pathway toward your purpose. You need to know the destination of your life before you can start laying the proper groundwork to get you there. 

Where Do You Get Vision for Your Life?
Provers 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the Law." 

The Biblical word for vision actually means "prophetic vision" or "divine guidance." In other words, discovering the right destination for your future life requires spending time seeking God through prayer and scripture reading.

Your true purpose in life can only be revealed by the One who gave you life. 

Praying for Wisdom and Direction
If you don't know how to pray for direction, it's simple. You can use your own words and ask God for the wisdom to know your purpose. 

James 1:5-8 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

The promise in this passage is that God will generously give you wisdom without holding past faults and failures against you. 

The key is that you must ask and then believe in the answer He has given you. You must believe without doubting. You can't allow your past to convince you God's plan is too good for you. He is generous and loving. The vision He gives you will be much greater than anything you can imagine. When it comes, believe and then take action accordingly. This is the secret to making the leap from recovery to discovery. 

God Can Help You Discover a Life and Purpose Far Greater Than You Imagine
I will leave you with this passage from Ephesians 3:14-20. Take time to read and reflect on it before you pray. Let God's generous love fill your heart and mind. Then pray and receive His incredible vision for your new life after addiction. 

Ephesians 3:14-20
For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
